Panopto: Troubleshooting
Fix Errors Caused by Third-Party Cookies
Note: In most cases, switching to a different web browser will solve the problem.
If you receive error messages, a blank screen, or Georgetown NetID login page when attempting to access or playback Panopto recordings please check your web browser’s cookie settings.
Cookies allow your user authorization and account details (e.g. name, NetID and course role) to pass from one system to another. Typically we see these issues with Panopto videos in Canvas, but it also possible you encounter issues with Panopto playback links outside of Canvas too.
Typically trying a different web browser to access Panopto content will resolve things. However, if you want to resolve cookie related issues with Panopto you will likely need to add cookie exceptions in your browser’s cookie settings. We do NOT recommend setting your browser to accept all cookies. However, adding cookie exceptions in your browser will allow the specific cookies in order for Panopto to work.
Alternatives to enabling cookies or adding cookie exceptions:
If you receive the specific error message below and do not want to change your browser settings, follow the displayed instructions to continue using Panopto.
“We were unable to sign you in because your browser is not accepting cookies. Click here to open this page in a new tab. You may need to log in again.”
- Click to open the page in a new tab.
- Next, click on “Sign In” under the Georgetown NetID SSO option.
- Then, sign in using your Georgetown NetID and password.
Note: If these steps do not resolve the issue, you will need to add cookie exceptions in your browser, or use a different browser all-together.
How to add cookie exceptions in your browser:
- Copy the Panopto cookie URL here: https://georgetown.hosted.panopto.com/
- Then click on the name of your browser below for instructions:
- Edge: Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t enabled a whitelist or blacklist option for Edge yet. If you need more granular controls of your cookies, you should choose from one of the better-supported options above.
- Safari: Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t enabled a whitelist or blacklist option for Safari yet. If you need more granular controls of your cookies, you should choose from one of the better-supported options above.
