Note: Please make sure anti-virus exceptions are made for audio (microphone), video (web camera), and screen in your preferred browser. Panopto plans to add support for Safari on desktop soon.
Panopto Capture allows you to easily record audio, video, and screens or applications. You can access Panopto Capture directly within a browser instead of downloading the Panopto Desktop Recorder. Panopto Captures requires the latest version of Chrome, Edge (Chromium-based), or Firefox browsers on Windows 10, macOS 10.15 or higher, or the latest ChromeOS. Capture is also in beta for Chrome and Firefox browsers on Android 9 or higher.
We recommend you access Panopto Capture from your Canvas course. This requires Canvas instructors to first enable Panopto in your course. If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) and follow step 3 below to record using Panopto Capture.

Allow Students to Create Panopto Recordings
By default, students can use Panopto in Canvas course Discussions to record, upload and embed content (see below for instructions). Panopto recordings made in a Canvas Discussion will be shared with anyone in the course who can access the specific Discussion topic.
Alternatively, Instructors can create a Panopto Assignments Folder if they want to allow students to record and upload Panopto media that are only shared with the instructor(s) in the course. An Assignment Folder in Panopto is a specific type of subfolder that sits within a Panopto Course Folder. Students who have access to the Panopto Course Folder have the ability to record and upload to the Assignment Folder. See our FAQ on Panopto Folders for more information about the different types of folders in Panopto.
Before creating an Assignment Folder, we recommend Canvas instructors first enable Panopto in their course. Once enabled, students in Canvas will make their recordings through the ‘Panopto’ button on the course menu.
Note: By default, the Assignment Folder is designed to only share student recordings and media uploads with the instructor(s) in the course only. However, instructors can configure the Assignments Folder to allow students to see one another’s uploaded recordings. This is explained in the Assignments Folder guide below.
- Students Use Canvas Discussions to Create and Embed Panopto Content
- Allow Students to Record and Upload Using the Assignments Folder
