Edit a Recording

Panopto recordings can be edited after they’ve been uploaded to Georgetown’s Panopto website.

We recommend you go through your Canvas course to edit Panopto recordings. If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) to edit a recording.

Note: If you’d rather edit a recording prior to making it available to students in Canvas, please see our Publish Recordings guide.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to your course site that has the recording you wish to edit.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the Canvas course menu.
  4. Mouse over the recording you want to edit, and click the “pencil” icon or ‘Edit’ button.
  5. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to edit a Panopto recording.

Create Panopto Quizzes

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only. We recommend creating Panopto quizzes from your Canvas course. If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) to create quizzes.

Owners of Panopto recordings have the ability to add quiz questions at any point during playback. The Panopto recording has to be uploaded to the Georgetown Panopto website first before quiz questions can be added.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to your course site that has the recordings you wish to add quiz questions.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the Canvas course menu.
  4. Mouse over the recording you want to add quiz questions, and click the “pencil” icon or ‘Edit’ button.
  5. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to add a quiz to a recording.

Create a Playlist of Recordings

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only. We recommend creating Panopto playlists from your Canvas course. If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) to create playlist.

Playlists allow recordings within your Panopto account to be presented in a single, ordered list even if those videos exist in different Panopto folders. See our FAQ on Panopto Folders for more information about the different types of folders in Panopto.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to a course where you want to create a Panopto playlist.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the Canvas course menu.
  4. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to create a playlist.
    Note: If you create the playlist within a Panopto course folder, that playlist will automatically be shared with students in the course. In other words, there is no need to manually enter names/emails to share the playlist with students.

Add Closed Captions to a Recording

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only.

Panopto can automatically generate captions for recordings. It uses AI to generate a transcript, which at its best is 80% accurate. However, you can edit the text after it’s generated. To auto generate captions for a recordings in Panopto follow these instructions:

  1. Login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window).
  2. Locate the recording that you want to add captioning.
  3. Mouse over the recording and click the “pencil” icon or ‘Edit’ button.
  4. In the editor window, click the ‘Captions’ button on the left side of the screen.
  5. Click on the ‘Import captions’ drop down menu.
  6. Click ‘Import automatic captions’.

  7. Click on the text to edit or delete the auto generated transcript.
  8. Click ‘Apply’ at the top of the editor window to save.

Copy or Move Recordings

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only. If you haven’t already, enable Panopto in the Canvas course(s) where you want to copy or move recordings from one Panopto folder to another. See our FAQ on Panopto Folders for more information about the different types of folders in Panopto.

If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) and go to step 5 to move/copy Panopto recordings.

Note: Any student created discussions that were set for “everyone” to view, and any notes that were made “public” within the Panopto playback window will be included in the copied/moved recording.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to the course where the recordings are located.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the course menu.
  4. Click the white/gray arrow icon on the right side of the screen to open the Georgetown Panopto website.

  5. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to copy/move recordings from one folder to another.

Download a Panopto Recording

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only. By default, students are not permitted to download Panopto recordings.

Owners of Panopto recordings (and co-instructors, TAs, Designers in Canvas) can download video or audio streams of Panopto recordings as MP4s. This might be helpful in cases where you want to upload them somewhere else or edit them using an external video editor.

If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) and go to step 5 to download Panopto recordings.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to your course site that has the recordings you wish to download.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the course menu.
  4. Mouse over the recording you want to download and click the gear icon or Settings button.
  5. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to download recordings.

View Playback Statistics

Note: The following guide is intended for instructors and staff only.

Owners of Panopto recordings (and co-instructors, TAs, Designers in Canvas who can access the Panopto course folder) can view statistics on shared recordings. Typical stats include the following:

  • NetID
  • Name
  • Views
  • Minutes Delivered
  • Average Minutes Delivered

If you are not planning to use Panopto in Canvas then you can login to the Georgetown Panopto website (new window) and go to step 5 to view playback statistics.

  1. Login to Canvas (new window).
  2. Navigate to the course where you want to view recording statistics.
  3. Click the Panopto button on the Canvas course menu.
  4. Mouse over the recording and click the graph icon or Stats button.
  5. Then, follow Panopto’s instructions on how to view Panopto analytics.
