NetID Password Security

Your NetID and NetID password allow you to log into a number of services where security is very important. Someone who has a student’s password can use is to change that student’s registration or send an inappropriate email to a class through Canvas. Someone who knows an employee’s password is able to view the employee’s salary and direct deposit information and can post grades in the employee is a faculty member. It is therefore crucial that you not share the password with anyone and that you create a password that is not easily guessed. 

Log Out of Public Computer Stations 

When checking email at a public computer station, it is important that you log out when you’re done with your email session. Simply closing the window you were using to read email leaves an opportunity for the person who sits down after you to gain access to your protected information. 

Choose a Good Password 

One of the best ways you have of protecting your privacy is by utilizing a “strong” passwords—one that is not easily guessed. Passwords should be at least eight characters long and contain mixed case letters, numbers, and special characters. Never use a pet’s or a child’s name.
