Changes to Google Drive Storage Limits

Posted in UIS News & Announcements  |  Tagged , , , ,

On January 31, 2023, Google automatically imposed a limit of 100 GB for shared Google Drives. Where possible, UIS has increased the storage allocation for all drives that exceeded 100 GB to allow for continued function. If you receive a message that you are approaching or have exceeded the limit, please try to free up storage space within your allocation by deleting unused files. If that is not possible, please contact UIS at help@georgetown.edu.

Google previously announced that educational institutions will no longer receive unlimited storage for Google Workspace. We are working to get additional information from Google and to plan for, and communicate, any additional changes to Google Workspace (e.g. Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, etc.). We will communicate more information over the coming months as we work to reduce our overall storage. In the meantime, please try to free up storage space within your allocation by:

  • Moving large files or topic-based folders to Georgetown Box, a cloud-storage platform with unlimited storage. If you wish to move your data from Google Drive to Box and are having difficulty, please contact the UIS Service Desk at help@georgetown.edu. Qatar-based users can contact the IT Help Desk at guqhelpcenter@georgetown.edu.
  • Deleting unused or unnecessary files. You can sort Google Drive folders by file size. This may help you review the largest files in your Drive for potential removal. Videos, presentations, and photos tend to be the largest file sizes.

Or please take advantage of the unlimited storage offered by Box. If you wish to move your data from Google Drive to Box and are having difficulty, please contact the UIS Service Desk at help@georgetown.edu. Qatar-based users can contact the IT Help Desk at guqhelpcenter@georgetown.edu.
