What is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is a multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can understand and generate text, images, audio, video, and computer code. It can help with tasks like brainstorming, summarizing documents, and finding information across Gmail, Docs, and Drive.

Gemini was designed to enhance productivity, discovery, and learning, and its application within the Georgetown community will vary by role. Users can leverage it to automate administrative tasks, accelerate research and enhance learning. Unlike consumer versions of AI tools, Georgetown’s enterprise instance of Gemini ensures that user chats and data are not used to train or improve the underlying models. Why has the University Adopted AI?

Modern AI has reshaped organizational workflows, educational methodologies, and employer expectations. Today’s students arrive at Georgetown already familiar with AI tools and expect to graduate with the AI literacy necessary for the modern workforce. This technology presents an opportunity to optimize our services, research, and pedagogy—ensuring we provide an elite experience for our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners. This initiative ensures our community remains at the forefront of the technological shift in higher education while maintaining a commitment to academic excellence.

Why did the University select Gemini?

Gemini was selected after a pilot program with faculty and staff in 2025. Pilot participants from across the teaching, research, and administrative units found great benefit to utilizing Gemini.

Gemini also has a native integration with Google Workspace.Our Master Services Agreement with Google ensures compliance with GU’s privacy and security requirements. Unlike consumer versions of AI tools, Georgetown’s enterprise instance of Gemini ensures that user chats and data are not used to train or improve the underlying models.

All community members should review the section, Policies and Responsible Use, to ensure they are engaging with AI appropriately, responsibly and in line with university’s policies before proceeding with claiming a Gemini license. It is critical that as we meet this technological shift in higher education as a community, it is done responsibly and aligned with Georgetown’s values.
