Technology Updates
Artificial Intelligence
For incorporating AI tools in teaching and research, see the extensive resources on the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) site or reach out cndls@georgetown.edu.
Canvas Updates
- Discussions and Announcements in Canvas have a new look and include some new features.
- Canvas’s new ‘Assign To’ workflow and interface. Canvas now makes it possible to assign many types of learning activities: pages, modules and ungraded discussions to all your students or to a subsection of your students. The new “Assign to” workflow and interface brings new features and expanded functionality, which results in some changes in how instructors assign graded learning activities.
- Check out the list of Apps and tools installed in Canvas. Do you want to use an app or tool that’s not on the list or in the Canvas App Center? Submit this Google form and we’ll work with you to make it available.
New Tools
- Join the pilot to use Gradescope! If you are teaching large courses you can leverage Gradescope to help sort through large numbers of handwritten exams. Gradescope uses AI to read graphs, diagrams, math proofs, economics equations and lab summaries. The tool, integrated into Canvas, has features that allow a team of teaching assistants and professors to divide up work, practice horizontal grading, and help develop grading rubrics and policies while you are grading, automatically and instantly regarding all previously graded exams.
- Lucid Chart and Lucid Spark. Now freely accessible through Canvas as external tools, LucidChart and Spark are apps for org. charts, flow charts and other charts. They are also available whenever faculty or students edit a document with a Rich Content Editor (RCE) menu, such as a Page, Discussion or answering an essay question or assignment. Please note: Lucid is a whiteboard app that might be a good substitute for Google’s JamBoard.
Digital Learning Days
Join us on Monday, August 26th, in ICC 224, for Digital Learning Days. Faculty will share how they are using AI, and we will offer Canvas and digital tools support throughout the afternoon. Keep an eye on your email for more information or visit our Digital Learning Days webpage.
