WiFi and Network Upgrade

Georgetown University and Verizon signed a strategic telecommunications agreement in January 2017 to uplift the campus network infrastructure, augment our cyber security capabilities, adopt co-management services, and provide a foundation for future innovation. The five-year engagement represents a new model for higher education, aligning two organizations to solve IT problems that exist today and position for the expansion of more powerful capabilities in the future.


UIS, Financial Affairs, and campus leadership sought to identify a strategic partner to address our infrastructure needs with a holistic, campus-wide approach. By engaging with a global partner, rather than separate point in time projects with multiple vendors, GU can accelerate the work, drive efficiency, and refocus internal resources to support cloud and research networking.

The engagement comes at an opportunistic time, as the campus demand for fast WiFi to the cloud is exceeding our current capacity. In addition, the University will be able to address risks from our aging fiber network (highway to the Internet and GU systems) and connect to Verizon’s 24/7/365 Security and Network Operations center.
