MIGRATING FROM GUSUN TO THE REPLACEMENT SERVERS
UPDATE: The GUSUN decommissioning date has been moved to MAY 31, 2007.
Please follow these steps to migrating your site off GUSUN and onto the replacement servers:
- Request for webspace by filling up the appropriate application form. Click here to go to the Webspace Application Forms Page.
- Once your webspace has been created on the new servers, the migration can begin. Log in to GUSUN and copy all of your Web page files from your GUSUN account to your computer. If you need help accessing your GUSUN files or need your password to be reset, please contact the Help Desk at x74949 or at help@georgetown.edu
- Access the new web servers and upload your web page files from your PC to your web space on the testing (development) server. Instructions will be given to you on how to access the servers via SFTP application when an account is created for you.
- Upload your website on the Testing Server make certain it is functioning as intended (i.e. re-checking if all hyperlinks are working and images are showing)
- Upload your Web page files from your PC to your web space on the Production Server. Send an e-mail to the webmaster, and we will forward the old GUSUN URL to the location on the new servers. If your department or organization has a domain name, we will point it to the new server location as well.

Differences between the new servers and the GUSUN server
- Department and organization space will no longer be housed in personal webspace as they are on the GUSUN server. Webspace will be created specifically for the department or organization. This eliminates the difficulty of locating individuals who are no longer affiliated at the university to transfer ownership of Web sites.
- You must use Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) to connect to the new servers. Regular FTP will not function. For more information and SFTP options, please go to this section on Connecting to the Servers.
- You will now be assigned to two servers, a development server and a production server.
- The development (testing) server is used to test Web sites before putting them on the production server.
- The production (live) server is where the Web site and applications will be hosted and viewed by visitors. Users who will be publishing ColdFusion applications must complete a Publishing Preparation Form for each application.
- All departments and organizations will receive a 100 MB quota on the new servers. This quota can be surpassed, but there will be a nominal yearly charge. We don't have the finalized pricing guidelines yet, but the charge will be very reasonable.
- Georgetown staff members will no longer receive global individual staff space. They can obtain webspace, but it is at the discretion of their department or organization. The webspace created will be in a subfolder of the department folder and will be the responsibility of the department.
- The new servers are Windows-based and run ColdFusion MX 6.1. The GUSUN server is UNIX-based and does not run any server-side languages.
- It is critical to test ColdFusion applications on the development server as untested applications can crash the entire server. Users who upload untested ColdFusion applications to the production server may have their access to the servers revoked.
Migrating to the new servers from the GUSUN server
The GUSUN server has served Georgetown University for nearly 10 years. However, the GUSUN server is now nearing the end of its life-span. Because of this, we are migrating all Web sites off of the GUSUN server to our new Web servers. We are projecting to have all of the websites off of the GUSUN server by the end of May 2007. We will therefore need to migrate everyone off of the GUSUN server. We will gladly assist users in migrating their site onto the new servers.
