CONNECTING TO THE SERVERS
This page contains information about connecting to the new Georgetown Web servers. We suggest that you read our introduction to the Web and information on how to become a Web developer before using this page.
NOTE: To connect to the new servers you will login with your university NetID username and password. You MUST reset your NetID password before you can obtain access.
Server Information
The new servers use Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) to upload and download files. If you have any type of FTP software that supports SFTP, it can be used to access the servers. However, if you have FTP software that does not have SFTP support, it cannot be used. Detailed instructions and your specific server addresses will be e-mailed to you when your account is first created.
FileZilla
FileZilla is file transfer software that can be used to connect to the servers via SFTP. You may download it for free from SourceForge.net. The How to Use FileZilla tutorial gives step-by-step directions for connecting to Georgetown's servers with FileZilla.
Dreamweaver MX 2004 and 8
Both Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Dreamweaver 8 have built-in SFTP and can be used to connect to the servers. However, older versions of Dreamweaver (including Dreamweaver MX) do not have SFTP and cannot be used. Dreamweaver 8 is available for use in certain areas of the Gelardin New Media Center on the first floor of Lauinger Library. Dreamweaver 8 is not free, but can be obtained from the Leavey Center Bookstore. For step-by-step instructions on connecting to the servers with Dreamweaver MX 2004 and 8, you can view the Dreamweaver online tutorial.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using Dreamweaver on a computer where multiple people have access, you MUST make certain to delete your site when you are finished working. Otherwise, your NetID and password will be saved in the site manager in Dreamweaver. The next individual that opens Dreamweaver will not be able to see your NetID password as it is encrypted. However, they WILL be able to access your webspace without needing to type in your NetID password.
FrontPage
Microsoft FrontPage does not support SFTP and cannot be used to connect to the servers. However, you may still use FrontPage as your editor and then use SSH Secure Shell to upload and download the files to the server. (It can be downloaded for free from Hoya Computing.) Since FrontPage cannot be used to access the servers, we are no longer supporting it. However, it can be purchased through Hoya Computing.
Fugu
Fugu is easy to use open-source Macintosh SFTP software that can be used to connect to the servers. You can visit the Fugu homepage and download it for free.
WS_FTP Professional
WS_FTP is software that has numerous features and a user-friendly interface. WS_FTP Professional 2006 is not free, but it can be obtained at substantial discounts through Georgetown's partner software vendor, CDWG.
