FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Troubleshooting
- I've uploaded files, but I can't I view them online. Why?
Double check the settings for both the FTP client (web/.../...) and the Web browser. Also, you must create and upload an index page.
Web Accounts
- How long does it take for webspace to be created?
New webspace accounts are generally created in 2-4 days. However, certain issues (like failing to reset your NetID password before submitting a request) can cause delays.
- How do I add or remove a user from our departmental/organizational Web site?
If you are an owner of a departmental or organizational Web site and you wish to add or remove users, send an e-mail the webmaster. Include the NetID(s) of the user(s) you wish to add or remove. In addition, each person who wants to gain access must fill out this form.
- How do I gain access to an existing departmental Web site?
Ask the departmental site administrator to e-mail the webmaster to request that you be given access. You must also fill out this form.
- Can GU staff members have webspace accounts?
There is no separate space available for staff. If you are a staff member and you wish to obtain webspace accounts, contact the webmaster of your department. The webmaster must authorize and grant you webspace in your department's directory.
Site Development
- Am I required to use a Georgetown template or graphics on my site?
Departments are not required to use any of the Web page templates provided by the University. These templates are intended as a starting point for departments and as examples for designers. However, templates contribute to the overall continuity and graphic identity of the Georgetown Web structure, as well as making development easier and faster. There are a variety of different templates available for creating pages that have a common format using the graphic standards developed by the GUide Committee. In addition, you may wish to consider using the Georgetown image database, which contains photographs from around the University as well as graphic elements such as University seals and official fonts.
- Where can departments go for assistance with Web development?
University departments, or users with advanced needs, should contact KeyBridge. Part of University Information Services, KeyBridge provides professional graphic design and application development services to Georgetown University clients on a contract basis.
- What Web editing software is available and supported through Georgetown?
Georgetown supports several software products that are useful in Web development, including Web editors, graphics/multimedia tools, and FTP tools. For more information on these products, how to get them, and the level of support available, visit the Web Development Software page.
Hosting
- How do I know where my site will be hosted?
You will have space on both a development server and a production server. After your webspace is created, the notification e-mail sent to you from webmaster@georgetown.edu will include numbers of the two servers assigned to you as well as a directory path. If you do not receive this information or you misplace it, send an e-mail to e-mail the webmaster.
- What is the difference between the development server and the production server?
The development server is where you will develop, test, or upgrade your application before publishing to a production server. After you have uploaded your content to the development server to test and you're satisfied with the result, you will move a copy to the production server. Your application must comply with production standards before you can publish to a production server. The production server(s) are where your applications can be viewed by visitors. Your production server number will be on the e-mail sent to you by webmaster@georgetown.edu. There should be no production applications hosted on thedevelopment server.
- How do I migrate my site from the GUSUN server to the new servers?
Georgetown is in the process of migrating all Web sites off of the GUSUN server to our new Web servers. This is occurring on a voluntary basis now, but we are projecting to have all of the Web sites off of the GUSUN server by the middle of 2006. If you want to get a jump on the migration process, you can request webspace on the new servers. It usually takes 2-4 business days to create and activate webspace on the new servers. See details on how to proceed with the migration.
- Can I obtain a new domain name for my Web site?
Several criteria must be met before new domain names will be granted. To rest a new domain name, complete this form.
- Does Georgetown have policies about copyright of Web content? The GUide Committee has put together a set of recommendations for top level pages of the Georgetown University Web structure. All Georgetown University Web developers must respect the copyrights of others.
