Getting Started
Logging in: the first thing you need to do is log into your Windows 7 computer with your NetID and NetID password.
Desktop Icons: there are various icons on your desktop.

You can add or delete those icons by right-clicking on them. To delete an icon, right click on the icon, and choose to delete.

To add another icon, right click on an empty space of your desktop, choose new, then Shortcut.

You will then be prompted to locate your program, file or folder on the computer. An example is a document that is located on the C: drive within the My Documents folder. Once you have located the document, press next, and confirm the name you have chosen for your shortcut.

Click on finish. Your shortcut should be on the desktop now.

Notification area: in the lower right corner of your computer, there are small icons that will let you know if there is a problem with your computer.

If there is a problem, a red flag will appear. Click on that to see what issues your computer needs addressed. Some examples include the icon to let you know that there is a problem with the printer, (may be off-line or out of paper, etc.). Here is also where you can see if you have Internet access. Additionally, you may have a memory stick that needs to be ejected from your computer. Once the memory stick is connected, you will see an icon of that. When the icon has been properly ejected, the picture is no longer visible.
Taskbar icons: anytime you want to add program icons to the toolbar in the lower left you can pin the icon to the taskbar by right clicking on the shortcut.

Restarting or logging off: this is as simple as left clicking on the window circle in the left. Your options to the immediate right are to shut down, log off, lock, restart, sleep or hibernate. All of those actions can be performed by choosing the proper option. Remember that you are not prompted before the action takes place.

Program Use
Methods to switch from one program to another:
- Taskbar all of the programs that are active are available in a small window on the task bar. Users can choose which application is active by left clicking on the document (or application).

Searching for Files
If you are unable to locate a file (or folder), click on your start button and type the name of the button in the search box above. Press your enter key and the magnifying glass will begin a search of the files and folders on your computer.

Another method is to go to open within the application (Word, Excel or PowerPoint). The search box is available in the upper right hand corner. Place a part of the name (or the entire name) with in the search box. Your document should be listed shortly.

Security
Locking your computer: before you step away from your computer, press the windows button, and your L key. This will lock your computer so that users walking buy do not see your information. Another method to locking your laptop is to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This will lock the computer too.
Shutting down is as simple as left clicking on the window circle in the left. Remember that you are not prompted before the action takes place. When you choose to shutdown, your computer will immediately begin to shut down. The next message you will see is that Windows is shutting down. The power will then turn off.
