Tech Tip for Windows: Shortcuts with the Windows Logo Key

21 November 2003

Ever wonder what the Windows logo key on your keyboard is for?  The Windows logo (Win) key has a picture of the Windows logo on it - Win.  On desktop PCs, there are usually two Window logo keys located between the two set of Control (Ctrl) and Alt keys.  On laptops, there is usually one key, but it's placement varies.

You can use the Windows key to open the Start menu on the taskbar, but it can also be used to access a number of shortcuts when you press it together with other keys:

Win + E = A new Windows Explorer window

Win + L = Lock your computer

Win + D = Hide all windows and show the desktop.  Press it again to bring everything back.

Win + F = Computer and files search box

Win + M = Minimize all open windows

Win + R = Quick access to the Run program box

For more Windows logo key and other keyboard shortcuts for Windows, see Microsoft's Windows XP Keyboard Shortcuts page.
