Summer Residents: Resnet Service for Students

Summer students living in residence halls and apartments have access to Georgetown's high-speed residential network (Resnet). Any computer with a working Local Area Network "Ethernet" card or Wireless Ethernet Card should be able to access the network.

Important Information about Security and Acceptable Use

Use of Resnet is goverened by the following guidelines and policies. Failure to abide by these rules may result in your removal from Resnet. Be sure to read, understand, and follow them:

If you have questions about any of these guidelines or policy rules, please contact the UIS Student Helpdesk at 202-687-4577 or techhelp@georgetown.edu for assistance.

Connecting Your Computer to Resnet

To connect a computer to Resnet, you need ONE of the following:

  • Network Interface ("Ethernet") Card and Category 5 "Ethernet" Patch Cable.: Most newer computers have a built-in Ethernet card and you can buy cables at the Leavey Center bookstore.
  • Wireless a, b, g, or n capable Network Card

UIS only provides support for computers running Windows Vista/7, Windows XP, or Mac OS X 10.5+ operating systems. While we can try to help with other OSs, we can't make any guarantees.

Alumni Square, Harbin, Nevils, New South, and Village A residents need some additional pieces of equipment if you wish to connect using an "Ethernet" cable and not Wireless.

  • If you are also a Georgetown student during the academic year and are returning to Georgetown in Fall, you can borrow a media adapter kit from the UIS Service Desk in St. Mary's G-39. If you have a media adapter in Spring, you can save yourself a trip by renewing over the Web and keeping it for the summer.
  • If you aren't a Georgetown student during the academic year or won't be returning in Fall, please use your Wireless Card to connect.

For most computers, you simply connect your computer to the jack in your room and start surfing. For further setup instructions and troubleshooting steps, see the Resnet support pages.
