NetID and E-mail Account Information for Recent Alumni

Timing of Account Closures for Alumni

Various technology services accounts for alumni are closed each year after the end of the spring semester.  Use the information below to save information before your accounts are closed.  UIS cannot retrieve messages or files from accounts after they have been closed.  This year's closure dates are:

E-mail Accounts

Other Accounts

  • Blackboard: May 13, 2009
  • GUCalendar: October 15, 2009
  • Web Hosting Accounts: June 12, 2009
  • UIS computer labs: see below

E-mail Services

Step 1: Set Your E-mail Forwarding

E-mail forwarding for life is available to all alumni through HoyasOnline. For more information, please visit the HoyasOnline Web site. Please note that you do not need to register to use HoyasOnline if you already know your NetID and password. Simply use them to log in.

To set-up e-mail forwarding, you will need to have a non-Georgetown e-mail account, such as one from your ISP, new school, employer, or a free e-mail provider. GUMail accounts for graduates of May 2009 and earlier will close beginning October 15, 2009. You should set up your e-mail forwarding as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss any important messages.

Step 2: Save Your Mail

  • Saving GUMail
E-mail already in your GUMail account can be copied to your computer's hard drive using a desktop e-mail program.

If you have never used a desktop e-mail client to check GUMail, see the following instructions on setting up and configuring Thunderbird:

If you already use a desktop e-mail client such as Thunderbird, Outlook or Mac Mail with GUMail, follow the appropriate link below to save your messages from GUMail:

  • Saving MSB Mail (Groupwise)
MSB terminates student Groupwise accounts six (6) months after graduation. Novell network accounts are terminated one (1) month after graduation. For more information on saving Groupwise mail, see the MSB's Tech Info for Graduating Students page or contact the MSB Technology Center at 202-687-4721.

Step 3: Set Your NetID Hint Question

If you forget your NetID password you can reset your password in HoyasOnline by successfully answering a hint question.  Set your hint question in Student Access+ or by registering with the HoyasOnline alumni Web site

Caution: If you ever reset your NetID password using the hint question, you will temporarily lose access to services other than the HoyasOnline website.  This includes Student Access+ and e-mail forwarding changes.  See the NetID Office's FAQs for instructions on upgrading your "level of assurance" and restoring access to other services.

Other Accounts

Other accounts will also be closed.  See details below.

Blackboard

Access to your Blackboard account will be deactivated on the evening of Wednesday, May 13, 2009.  If you need any documents from any of your courses on Blackboard, please log in before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 to retrieve them.

Web Hosting

Web Hosting Accounts for May 2009 graduates will be closed and all data in the accounts will be deleted on Friday, June 12, 2009.  If you need any data in your account, transfer the files somewhere else or to a new owner before this date.

Any May 2009 graduates with access to departmental or student organization web hosting accounts will have access to these accounts removed on Friday, June 12, 2009.

To save any files you may have stored on these systems, login to your account with a file-transfer client and save the files to your personal computer.

GUCalendar

If you used the GUCalendar service, your account will be deactivated and deleted beginning October 15, 2009.

Computer Labs

UIS computer labs are reserved for current students. After graduation or leaving the university, you will no longer be able to access UIS computer labs.  Access will be removed beginning May 15, 2009.
