HOW TO USE WINDOWS XP: RUNNING AN ADMINISTRATOR TASK FROM A LIMITED ACCOUNT

Windows XP users with Limited accounts do not normally have the capability to perform tasks that change the computer system (such as installing software or defragmenting a hard drive). However, Windows XP will allow a Limited user to perform these tasks if a Computer Administrator logs in to the individual program.

  1. Find the the program you want to run as a Computer Administrator. (It can be located any place you would normally open a program: on your Desktop, in folders, in the Start Menu, on Toolbar shortcuts, etc.)

  2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.

  3. Right click on the program's icon.  A menu will appear.

  4. Click on Run As...

Click Run As...

  1. The Run As Other User window will open.

  2. The Computer Administrator should type his or her User name and Password.

  3. Click on the OK button.

The Run As Other User window.

  1. The program will open under the control of the Computer Administrator account you specified.

You can open as many programs as you wish using the Run As... method, and they can all remain open at once. Once you've finished with the program, exit the program as you normally would.
