WINDOWS VISTA: CAN I RUN VISTA ON MY COMPUTER?

If you've been shopping around for that new computer, you may have noticed that most of the major computer vendors have designated their computer "Windows Vista Capable" or "Windows Vista Premium Ready." Not sure what they mean? Well, below you'll find definitions for both terms, as well as what it means to buy a computer with each designation.

Running Vista on Your Current Computer?

If you're not sure whether your computer can run Vista on your computer, Microsoft has created a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor that will scan your computer to help you choose which edition of Windows Vista is right for you. It will also, according to Microsoft, "provide guidance about many of the advanced Windows Vista features your computer supports and compatibility of your existing software and devices with Windows Vista."

Note:  Depending on which computer you own (vendor, model, and current hardware specifications), you may need to get additional memory and storage space in order to run Vista.

Running Vista on a New Computer

If you're looking to buy a new computer, you should be aware that Vista has higher hardware requirements than Windows XP. Microsoft has created multiple categories that differentiate between computer systems based on how much of the Vista operating system the hardware can support. The following section lists these designations and describes the hardware requirements for each.

What is "Windows Vista Capable"?

Windows Vista Capable means that you'll be able to install Vista, but doesn't guarantee that all its features will work. For example, the Aero "glass" effect may be disabled (will not work) on computers that are only Windows Vista Capable.

According to Microsoft, Windows Vista Capable means that a system meets the minimum hardware requirements to provide the core functionality of Windows Vista, consistent with basic versions (such as Home Basic) of Windows Vista.

A system with less than 1 GB of system memory will not support many of the advanced features of premium versions of Windows Vista, including the Windows Aero user interface.

The minimum system requirements for a Vista Capable computer are:

  • A modern processor (at least 800 MHz)
  • 512MB of system memory
  • A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable

For more information, see Microsoft's web site on Windows Vista Capable computers.

What is "Windows Vista Premium Ready"?

Windows Vista Premium Ready, as compared to Vista Capable, means that your computer is guaranteed to be able to run Vista and that the hardware will be able to handle the features in Vista.

The minimum system requirements for a Vista Premium Ready computer are:

  • At least a 1GHz 32 bit (x86) or 64 bit (x64) processor
  • 1 GB of system memory
  • 40 GB of available hard disk with 15 GB of free space
  • DirectX 9 class graphics card with at least 128 MB of graphics memory that supports the new Window Display Driver Model, Pixel Shader 2.0, and 32 bits per pixel (all required to run the Aero interface).
  • DVD-ROM drive (may be external, not built into the system)
  • Audio output capability
  • Internet access capability
