HOW TO USE WINDOWS 95 AND 98: PRINTING TO A NETWORK PRINTER

  1. Click on the Start button (usually found at the bottom-left corner of your screen).

  1. Click on Settings. In the menu that appears, Click on Printers.

  1. Double Click on Add Printer.  This will bring up the Add Printer Wizard.

  1. Click on the Next button.

  1. Click in the little white circle next to Network Printer. (A black dot should appear in the circle.)  Click on the Next button.

  1. Below Network path or queue name, Type the printer's network path (it's location on the network).  If you don't know the printer's network path, contact your HelpDesk.

  1. Click on the Next button.

  1. Below Manufacturer, Click on the name of the printer's manufacturer. Manufacturers are listed in alphabetical order and you may have to click on the little down arrow until the manufacturer's name appears in the list.

  2. Below Model, Click on the model of the printer you will be using.  Model names are listed in  alphabetical order and you may need to click on the little down arrow until the model name appears in the list.

Note: You can often find the manufacturer and model names by looking on the printer itself.

  1. Click the Next button.  Windows will check to see if it has the software necessary to communicate with the printer (the software your computer needs to communicate with devices like printers, monitors, and disk drives is known as a driver).  If so, it will install the software automatically.

Note: If you receive a message saying that Windows was unable to locate the necessary files, you will need to get the necessary software before continuing.  Most often, the printer manufacturer's Web site will have a section called Drivers, from which you can download the software necessary to use their products.  If you are unable to locate the software on the manufacturer's Web site, inquire within your department to see if someone is in possession of a software installation disk for the printer.  Once you have obtained the necessary software, click here for instructions on installing a driver.

  1. You will then be asked if you want to make this the default printer.  If you want your applications to print to this printer automatically, Click the Next button.  If you want to use this as a secondary printer (i.e., you must select it manually when you print from applications), Click in the little white circle next to No.  Now Click on Next.

  1. Click in the little white circle next to Yes (recommended), then Click the Finish button.  A test page should print out on the printer you've just connected to.

Congratulations! You will now be able to use this printer to print from all of your Windows applications.
