Make Your First Backup

This step is useful for those who have not already created a regular backup job or those who wish to archive files that are no longer needed on their hard drive.

If you have already performed a backup job that you would like to repeat again, proceed to step 3, Make a Weekly Backup.

  1. After you have opened the Backup utility, Click Create a new backup job to select it. A black dot will appear in the circle.

  2. Click the OK button.

  1. Next you will be asked what type of a backup you would like to do. Click Back up selected files, folders, and drives.

  2. Click the Next button.

  1. You can now choose the files and folders you want to back up. In general, you will only need to back up data files such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Web browser bookmarks, and original data sets.

  •  To back up an entire folder, click the blank box to the left of the folder. A check mark will appear in the box. (To un-check the folder, click the box again.)
  • To see what is contained in the folder, double-click the folder. The contents of the folder will appear in the right section of the window.
  • To back up a file, click the blank box to the left of the file. A check mark will appear in the box. (To un-check the file, click the box again.)

  1. Click the Next button.

Next you will choose to back up all of the files you have just selected.

  1. Click All selected files.

  2. Click the Next button.

Now you will choose where to save your backup.

  1. Click the file folder button to select your storage device (either Zip disk or CD Writer).

  2. Click the Next button.

In this step, you can choose to verify that your backup has proceeded correctly and to compress your backup.

  1. Click the Next button.

  1. Type a name for your backup job. Including the date of the backup in its name will help you tell which backup is which.  Remember this name if you would like to regularly backup the files you have selected.

  2. Click the Start button.

  1. The Backup Progress window will open. It might take a few seconds for your backup to start. One the backup starts, it will run without any input from you.

  1. When the backup is finished, click the OK button.

  1. You can either click the Report button to see a summary of your backup or the OK button to close Backup.
  1. It is recommended that you backup important files on a weekly basis. Fortunately, Windows remembers the settings of backup jobs so you can save time if you wish to repeat them.  If you would like to repeat a specific backup job that you have already performed, proceed to Step 3: Make a Weekly Backup.
