HOW TO USE MAC OS X 10.4: UNDERSTANDING USER ACCOUNTS

You'll need an account (a user name and password) before you can use a computer that is running OS 10. Without an account, you will be unable to login into (and use) the computer.

There are two types of accounts: an administrator account can change all computer settings (for example, installing software and creating new accounts); a standard account can only modify the passwords for its own accounts.

If you have an OS 10 computer in your office, and you are the computer's primary user: UIS will create an account on your computer for you. You will only need to create accounts if other people in your office want to use your computer.

If you want to use another person's OS 10 computer: Someone with an administrative account on the computer will have to create an account for you.

Accounts provide greater security (unauthorized people can never use your computer) while allowing each user to customize the computer. For example, if the computer has six authorized users, each person could have a different screen saver, or set up the desktop differently, without interfering with another person's favorite settings.

Additional accounts can be set up in a couple of ways, but regardless of which method you use, the account and personal settings, preferences, files and folders of one account holder are hidden completely from all other account holders. The Fast User Switching feature enables one account holder to log in without requiring someone else to log out first. Users can switch quickly from one account to another.
