HOW TO USE MAC OS X 10.4: CHECKING YOUR NETWORK CONNECTION

  1. Click on Go at the top of your screen, then click on Applications.

  1. Click on the Utilities menu item and then click on the Network Utility menu item.

  1. Double-click on the Network Utility icon in the Preview pane. The Network Utility window will be displayed.
  1. Click on the Info tab. If you are connected to the network, a value will appear beside Link Speed and Link Status will appear as Active (as shown in the above example). If Inactive still appears, see If Your Link Status is Inactive below.

If Your Link Status is Inactive

  1. Turn the base of your computer around so that you can see the cords that connect into the back of it. Find your Ethernet cable (it looks like a larger than normal phone cord and it plugs into your computer with a phone-cord-like connector). Unplug the cable and push it back in again until you hear a click.
  2. Once you've made sure that the cable is firmly connected to the back of your computer, follow the cable away from your computer to where it plugs in to the wall jack. Carefully remove the Ethernet cable from the wall jack and reinsert it, pushing until your hear a click. Note: Make sure you connect your cable to the correct jack.
  3. Check your network connection again. If the Link Status doesn't change to Active, try using a different Ethernet cable. If your connection still doesn't come up as Active, contact your Help Desk.
