How to Use FileZilla: Transferring Files

This example shows you how to upload a file to a www7.georgetown.edu account. Before you can transfer files, you must be connected to a server.

 

1. First, follow directions to connect to the server.

2. When you have established a connection between your computer and the server, the files and folders stored in the directory will appear on the right side of the FileZilla window.

 

 

3. In the edit field at the top of the right side of the window, you must enter the path to the directory that you want to access. This information was included in the e-mail from the webmaster when your webspace account was activated. For example, most students' webspace accounts are located at the following path: /web/students/netid. Enter this path in the edit field where it says Remote Site. Click Enter.

 

 

4. The left side of the window will show the files and folders on your PC. The current folder is shown in the edit field above the left window. You can change this folder by either double-clicking on a folder within the window, or by entering the folder name in the edit field at the top and pressing Enter. Click through the folders until you see the file(s) you want to upload to the server.

 

 

5. To transfer a file from your computer to the server, click on the file in the left side of the window and drag it to the appropriate folder in the right side of the window. (Note: You can select more than one file by holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you select the files.)

 

 

6. Once the file has finished transferring, the file will appear in the right-hand side of the window. If you transferred the file into a folder, click on that folder to see that is has successfully uploaded to the server.

 

 

7. You can also add files to a queue so that they will be transferred at a later time. Highlight the file from the left-hand side of the window that you want to transfer. Right-click, and from the pop-up menu, choose Add to Queue. To see the files waiting in your queue, click on the show the queue icon on the toolbar. When you are ready to transfer the files, click on the process the queue icon on the toolbar. A window at the bottom of the screen appears that shows the progress of files being uploaded.

8. To download a file from the server, follow the same procedure. After finding the file on the server (in the right-hand side of the window) that you want to download, drag it to the appropriate directory on your local computer (in the left-hand side of the window.)
