INSTALLING SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS 9.0.1 FOR WINDOWS PC: Uninstall Old Anti-virus Software

Uninstall Old Anti-Virus Software These instructions are for people who are using Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your computer has a different operating system, go to the Software page and use the documentation for your operating system.   UIS offers Symantec AntiVirus free of charge to all Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff for use on home and office computers.

 

Before you install Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 on your computer, you should uninstall the anti-virus software you are using now.

 

1. Close any documents and exit any programs that are open on your computer.

    

2. Click the Start button. (This will bring up a menu.) Click Control Panel.

   

    

3. The Control Panel window will open. Click Add or Remove Programs.

   

    

4. A list of the programs on your computer will open. Click your anti-virus program. A Remove button will appear. Click the Remove button. 

   

    

5. Click Yes in the confirmation window to proceed with removing the software.

6. Stand by while the software uninstalls from your computer. The uninstall operation should take a few minutes.

7. You may be prompted to reboot your computer to complete the uninstallation process. Click the Yes button to reboot your computer.  

8. Uninstall LiveUpdate as well if it appears in the Add or Remove Programs list as a software program separate from the antiVirus program.

   

9. Click the Yes button to confirm that you want to uninstall LiveUpdate.
10. Click the OK button in the confirmation pop-up window.
11. Proceed to the next step, Install Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1.
