Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans

These instructions are for people who are using Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your computer has a different operating system, go to the Software page and use the documentation for your operating system.

UIS offers Symantec AntiVirus free of charge to all Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff for use on home and office computers.

At a time of your choice, Symantec AntiVirus will carefully check your entire hard drive(s) for the presence of viruses and similar threats. Since the virus scan will likely slow your computer's performance, it is recommended that you schedule the scan for a time you'll be away from your computer (like lunch).  It is not recommended that you leave your computer on overnight; this is a security risk.

  1. If you have not already done so, open Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1.

  2. You will see a list of folders on the left side of the Symantec AntiVirus window. Click Scheduled Scans.

  3. The Scheduled Scans options will appear on the right side of the window. Click New Scheduled Scan.

  1. Under "Name", type weekly virus scan.

  2. Click the Next button.

  1. Below "Frequency", click Weekly (A black dot will appear in the circle next to Weekly).

  2. Under "When", use the drop-down arrow to choose the time your weekly virus scan will run.

  3. Click the Next button.

  1. Click the drives, folders, and files to include in your virus scan. A check mark will appear in the box next to each drive you want to scan.

Click the check boxes next to:
  • Your local hard drive(s).
  • Your personal network drive.
  • Any shared drive(s) or shared drive folder(s) that are your responsibility to maintain.

  1. Click the Save button.

  1. You should now see "weekly virus scan" listed among the contents of the Scheduled Scans folder.

Go on to the next configuration step, Scheduling Automatic LiveUpdates.
