Install Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 from a Download

    These instructions are for people who are using Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your computer has a different operating system, go to the Software page and use the documentation for your operating system.

UIS offers Symantec AntiVirus free of charge to all Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff for use on home and office computers.

Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff can borrow a Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 installation CD from Hoya Computing for three business days or download the Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 installer from the UIS Software Database.

If you access the Georgetown network using a dial-up connection, it is recommended that you install the software from the CD.

  1. Uninstall your old anti-virus software before proceeding.

  2. Download the Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 installer from the UIS Software Database. Save the installer to your Desktop. (See the instructions for downloading software if you would like assistance with this).

  3. Exit any programs that are running on your computer.

  1. Double-click the symantec_antiVirus_9_for_
    georgetown_university.exe     installer that you saved on your desktop.


  1. The Symantec AntiVirus 9 Installer will open. Click the Next button.

  2. The License Agreement will open. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click the Next button.

  3. Click the Install button to begin the installation. The installation may take a few minutes to complete.

    After Symantec AntiVirus has installed, a virus scan may run automatically. This may also take a few minutes to complete.

  4. Symantec AntiVirus will now perform a LiveUpdate. Click the Next button to search for updated Symantec AntiVirus components.



    Note: This process may take a few minutes to complete.

  5. After a few moments, you will see any updated components LiveUpdate has found. Click the Finish button to close the window.



  6. Click the Finish button in the installation status window.

  7. Rebooting your computer will complete your installation of Symantec AntiVirus. Click the Reboot Now button to reboot your computer.

  8. Schedule virus scans for your computer by performing SETTING UP SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS 9.0.1 FOR WINDOWS PC: Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans.
