These instructions are for people who are using Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your computer has a different operating system, go to the Software page and use the documentation for your operating system.

UIS offers Symantec AntiVirus free of charge to all Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff for use on home and office computers.

Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff can borrow a Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 installation CD from Hoya Computing for three business days or download the Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 installer from the UIS Software Database.

  1. Uninstall your old anti-virus software before proceeding.
  2. Exit any other programs that are running on your computer.
  3. Put the Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 CD in your CD drive. The CD should start automatically.

If the CD does not start automatically
    , perform the following:
    1. Double-click the My Computer icon that appears on your Desktop.
    2. Double-click the CD drive icon to display the SAV CD installer main menu.
  4. Click Install Symantec AntiVirus

  5. Click Install Symantec AntiVirus again in the next menu window.

  6. Click the Next button in the Symantec AntiVirus welcome window.

  7. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click the Next button.

  8. You will need to tell the installation wizard whether you are installing Symantec AntiVirus to a client (personal computer workstation) or a server (a machine that controls network resources). Click Client Install then click the Next button.

  9. You will be asked to choose either a Complete or Custom installation. Some components of Symantec AntiVirus are not compatible with GUMail, so click Custom. Click the Next button.

  10. Now you will choose which components of Symantec AntiVirus will not be installed. Since AntiVirus e-mail tools will prevent GUMail from working properly, click the button next to AntiVirus Email Tools.

  11. Select This Feature Will Not Be Available from the drop-down menu.

  12. You will now select either the Managed or Unmanaged version of Symantec AntiVirus to install. The Managed version is for computers that are scanned for viruses by a server; the Unmanaged version scans only the personal computer workstation on which it is installed. Select Unmanaged, then click the Next button.

  13. Make sure Auto-Protect and Run LiveUpdate are selected. Auto-Protect scans files for viruses as you work, while LiveUpdate keeps Symantec AntiVirus current with the most up-to-date virus protection possible. Click the Next button.

  14. You are now ready to install Symantec AntiVirus. Click the Install button to begin the installation. Note: The installation may take several minutes to complete.

  15. Symantec AntiVirus will now perform a LiveUpdate. Running LiveUpdate will provide you with the latest antivirus updates and keep your computer protected. Click the Next button to search for updated Symantec AntiVirus components.

  16. After a few moments, you will see any updated components LiveUpdate has found. Click the Finish button.

  17. Symantec AntiVirus has been installed successfully on your computer. Click the Finish button.

  18. Reboot your computer to complete your installation of Symantec AntiVirus.

  19. Schedule Symantec AntiVirus to scan your computer regularly for viruses by going to SETTING UP SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS 9.0.1 FOR WINDOWS PC: Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans.
