Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans

These instructions are for people who are using Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your computer has a different operating system, go to the Software page and use the documentation for your operating system.

At a time of your choice, Symantec AntiVirus will carefully check your entire hard drive(s) for the presence of viruses and similar threats. Since the virus scan will likely slow your computer's performance, it is recommended that you schedule the scan for a time you'll be away from your computer (like lunch). It is not recommended that you leave your computer on overnight, as this can pose a security risk.

1. If you have not already done so, open Symantec AntiVirus 8.1.
   • Instructions for opening Symantec AntiVirus 8.1 on Windows 98, ME, and 2000.

2. You will see a list of folders on the left side of the Symantec AntiVirus window. Click Scheduled Scans.

   

3. The Scheduled Scans options will appear on the right side of the window. Click New Scheduled Scan.

   

4. Under "Name", type weekly virus scan.

5. Click the Next button.

6. Click Enable Scan. (A check mark will appear in the box next to it.)

7. Below "Frequency", click Weekly (A black dot will appear in the circle next to Weekly).

8. Under "When", use the drop-down arrow to choose the time your daily virus scan will run.

9. Click the Next button.

10. Click the drives, folders, and files to include in your virus scan. A check mark will appear in the box next to each drive to be scanned.

• Click the box(es) next to your local hard drive(s).
• Click in the box next to your personal network drive.
• Click in the box(es) next to any shared drive(s) you own.

11. Click the Save button.

12. You should now see "weekly virus scan" among the contents of the Scheduled Scans folder.
