 Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans

These instructions are for people who are using Windows 95 B or Windows 95 C. If your computer has a different operating system, go to Anti-virus Tools. If you're not sure which operating system you use, go to Checking Your Operating System

At a time of your choice, Norton will carefully check your entire hard drive(s) for the presence of viruses. Since the virus scan will likely slow your computer's performance, it is recommended that you schedule the scan for a time you'll be away from your computer (like lunch or a regular weekly meeting).  It is not recommended that you leave your computer on over night, as this can pose a security risk.

  1. If you have not already done so, open Norton AntiVirus 7.6.

  2. You will see a list of folders on the left side of the Symantec AntiVirus window. Click Scheduled Scans. The Scheduled Scans options will appear on the right side of the window.

    Scheduled Scans window

  3. Click New Scheduled Scan.

    Scheduled Events window

  4. Under "Name", type weekly virus scan.

  5. Click the Next button.

Type in a name for your virus scan.

  6. Click the Advanced button.  This will open the Advanced Schedule Options window.

    Click Advanced.

  7. Under Missed Event Options, Click the box next to Handle missed events within: (a check mark should appear in the box), then Type 3 in the box next to days of scheduled time. This option ensures that Norton AntiVirus will not skip a virus scan if you are away from your computer for a few days.

  8. Click the OK button to return to the Weekly Virus Scan window.

    Advanced Schedule Options.

  9. Click in the box next to Enable Scan (a check mark should appear in the box).

  10. Below Frequency, Click in the white circle next to Weekly (a black dot will appear in the circle).

  11. Under When, you will choose the time and day your weekly virus scan will run.  Since the virus scan will likely slow your computer's performance, it is recommended that you schedule the scan for a time you'll be away from your computer (like lunch or a regular weekly meeting).  It is not recommended that you leave your computer on over night, as this can pose a security risk.  To set a time for the scan:

    • Next to Every, Click on the down arrow.  This will drop down a list of the days of the week.  Click on the day between Monday and Friday you want the weekly virus scan to occur.

    • Next to At, Click on the down arrow.  This will drop down a list of times.  Click on the time of day you want the virus scan to occur.

  12. Click on the Next button.

Choose how often your virus scan will run.

  13. Now you'll tell Norton Corporate AntiVirus which drives, folders, and files it should include in your virus scan.

    • Click in the box(es) next to your local hard drive(s). (Most people have a hard drive called C: and some have a second hard drive called D:.  If you use any other local hard drives, Click in the boxes next to those drives as well.)
    • Click in the box next to your personal network H: drive.  Verify that a checkmark appears in the box next to each drive to be scanned.

  14. Click on the Save button.

    Save your virus scan.

  15. You should now see your weekly virus scan among the contents of the Scheduled Scans folder.

Your weekly virus scan can be seen in the directory tree.

Proceed to the next step, Scheduling Automatic Live Updates.
