Install Norton AntiVirus 7.6 from a Downloaded File

    These instructions are for people who are using Windows 95 B or Windows 95 C. If your computer has a different operating system, go to Anti-virus Tools. If you're not sure which operating system you use, go to Checking Your Operating System

If your computer is connected to the University's network, you can download the Norton AntiVirus 7.6 installer. Save the installer to your Desktop. For assistance with downloading files, see our instructions for downloading software.

If you're not connected to the network (or you just prefer not to download), you can borrow an installation CD from Hoya Computing.

 

  1. Before you download or install any program on your computer, make sure to uninstall old anti-virus software and exit any other programs that are running.

  2. Double-click the norton76.windows95.setup.exe installer that you saved on your desktop.
Double-click the Norton installer.
   
  1. The Norton AntiVirus 7.6 installer will open. The window will say "Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client Setup will install the client to this computer." Click the OK button to continue.

Click Yes.
 
  1. Stand by while the installer prepares to install Norton AntiVirus 7.6. Two or three different windows might open or close while this happens.
 Stand by while the Installer opens.
 
  1. The Norton AntiVirus 7.6 setup program will open. Click the Next button to proceed.
 The Setup window will open. Click Next.
 
  1. The Norton AntiVirus license agreement will open. Read the agreement to learn about the privileges and restrictions that come with your license. Click I accept the terms of the license agreement then click the Next button.
 Accept the license agreement then click Next.
 

  1. You will be asked to choose a Mail Snap-in to check e-mail as it is opened. Do not check any snap-ins. Snap-ins will not work with GUMail and will block your computer from sending e-mail. E-mail in the GUMail system is stored on a server where it is scanned for viruses.

    Click the Next button.

 Do not check any snap-ins. Click Next.
 
  1. By default Norton AntiVirus 7.6 will install in the Programs folder on your hard drive. Keep this default setting. Click the Next button.
 Install to your hard drive. Click Next.
 
  1. The next step of the setup program asks you to choose your network setup type. Click Unmanaged. Click the Next button to continue.
 Click Unmanaged then click Next.
 
  1. You should see a check mark next to File System Realtime Protection. Do not change this setting - Realtime Protection protects your system against new viruses as you work. Click the Next button.
 Click Finish.
 
  1. Click the Install button to begin installing Norton AntiVirus 7.6.
 Click Reboot Now.
 
  1. Stand by while Norton AntiVirus installs on your computer.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program contains technical support information. Click the Next button.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program contains information on LiveUpdate. Click the Next button.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program will ask if you want to run LiveUpdate after the installation. Make sure there is a check mark next to Run LiveUpdate after installation. Click the Next button

  1. Click the Finish button.
 
  1. Restart your computer to complete the installation. Click the Yes button. Your computer will automatically restart.
 

After your computer has rebooted and you have logged back on to
the network, go to the next step and set up Norton AntiVirus 7.6.
