Install Norton AntiVirus 7.6 from a CD

    These instructions are for people who are using Windows 95 B or Windows 95 C. If your computer has a different operating system, go to Anti-virus Tools. If you're not sure which operating system you use, go to Checking Your Operating System

Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff can borrow a Norton AntiVirus 7.6 installation CD from Hoya Computing for three business days.

If your computer is connected to the University's network, you can download the Norton AntiVirus 7.6 installer instead.

  1. Before you download or install the program on your computer, make sure to uninstall old anti-virus software and exit any other programs that are running.

  2. Put the Norton AntiVirus 7.6 CD in your CD drive. it should start automatically.
 

  • If the CD does not start automatically, open the Run utility, browse to your CD drive, and open Cdstart.exe.
  • Detailed instructions for using the Run utility can be found at Installing Software from a CD. Return to this page once you've started the CD.


The installation file is called Cdstart.exe.
 

  1. The Norton AntiVirus installer will open. Click Install Norton AntiVirus Client Locally.
Click Install Norton AntiVirus Client Locally.
 
  1. Stand by while the installer prepares to install Norton AntiVirus 7.6. Two or three different windows might open or close while this happens.
Stand by while the Installer opens.
 
  1. The Norton AntiVirus 7.6 setup program will open. Click the Next button to proceed.
The Setup window will open. Click Next.
 
  1. The Norton AntiVirus license agreement will open. Read the agreement to learn about the privileges and restrictions that come with your license. Click I accept the terms of the license agreement then click the Next button.
Accept the license agreement then click Next.
 
  1. You will be asked to choose a Mail Snap-in to check e-mail as it is opened. Do not check any snap-ins. Snap-ins will not work with GUMail and will block your computer from sending e-mail. E-mail in the GUMail system is stored on a server where it is scanned for viruses.

    Click the Next button.

Do not check any snap-ins. Click Next.
 
  1. By default Norton AntiVirus 7.6 will install in the Programs folder on your hard drive. Keep this default setting. Click the Next button.
Install to your hard drive. Click Next.
 
  1. The next step of the setup program asks you to choose your network setup type. Click Unmanaged. Click the Next button to continue.
Click Unmanaged then click Next.
 
  1. You should see a check mark next to File System Realtime Protection. Do not change this setting - Realtime Protection protects your system against new viruses as you work. Click the Next button.
Click Finish.
 
  1. Click the Install button to begin installing Norton AntiVirus 7.6.
Click Reboot Now.
 
  1. Stand by while Norton AntiVirus installs on your computer.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program contains technical support information. Click the Next button.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program contains information on LiveUpdate. Click the Next button.
 
  1. The next window of the setup program will ask if you want to run LiveUpdate after the installation. Make sure there is a check mark next to Run LiveUpdate after installation. Click the Next button
