HOW TO USE NORTON ANTIVIRUS 5: INSTALLING NORTON ANTIVIRUS 5

Norton AntiVirus 5 will not work on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. These pages are maintained as a service for those who are still using Windows 95 and do not wish to change. The standard antivirus software for Georgetown computers is Symantec 8. These instructions cover only installation; for help with using Norton AntiVirus 5, see Norton's documentation.

Norton AntiVirus 5 does not include the free LiveUpdate feature.
This means the software will be ineffective against newly created viruses. If at all possible, you should upgrade your system and use up-to-date antivirus software. If you must use Norton Antivirus 5, you should consider purchasing a LiveUpdate contract at your own expense.

Norton AntiVirus 5 can only be downloaded to a computer that is connected to the main campus network. To download Norton AntiVirus onto your computer you must go to the UIS software database. Using an ethernet connection, downloading will take less than three minutes, but it can take much longer over a slower connection; you may want to get this software on CD from Hoya Computing's lending library.

  1. Save the file norton.exe onto your hard disk.
  1. Exit all Windows programs, then double-click on the norton icon to start the installation procedure.

  1. When the Welcome screen appears, click on the Next button. This will bring up the License Agreement.

  1. You must click on the Yes button before you can install the program.
  1. You'll be asked to choose the location of your Norton AntiVirus files.

  1. Click on the Next button to accept the default location.
  1. If Norton AntiVirus is already installed, you will have the option of keeping or modifying the current settings.

  1. Make your selection, then click on the Next button.
  1. For optimal virus protection, the following options are pre-selected:
         A. Weekly scans of the hard drive every Friday night.
         B. Auto-Protect scans new files for viruses.
         C. At startup critical files and memory are scanned.

  1. You may disable any of these options by clicking the checked box to the left of each option.  Click on the Next button.
  1. Confirm your settings.

  1. Then click on the Next button to start installing the program, or click on the Back button to modify your settings.
  1. After the files are copied, you'll be asked to register the program.

  1. When the Help-line information window appears, Click on the Next button.

              protection information.
         B. Rescue Disk Set creates disks to help you recover
             from virus emergencies.
         C. Automatically does an initial scan of your computer
for viruses after you restart it.

  1. You may disable any of the above options.

Note: Norton AntiVirus 5 does not include the free LiveUpdate feature. If you want to use LiveUpdate, you will have to purchase a contract at your own expense.

Note: If your computer has many files on it, scanning for viruses may take a long time. Click on the Next button.

  1. The Norton AntiVirus Rescue Disk window will appear if you selected this option. The Rescue Disks will help you recover from virus emergencies.

  1. You need 3 blank 1.44MB disks.  Insert the first disk in drive A: and click on the OK button to continue.  Or click on the Cancel button to abort.
  1. You must restart your computer for Norton AntiVirus to take effect. You may chose to do so at this time (recommended).

  1. You have the option for Norton AntiVirus to plug into Netscape to enhance your virus protection when downloading files from the internet.
