Working with Confidential Data

Georgetown University security policy classifies electronic data that contains Social Security Numbers (such as SSNs) as confidential data. This type of data requires a valid work-related need to exist on your computer.

The UIS Rapid Response Team has been established as part of the University's Data Security Enhancement Task Force, and is in the process of implementing some practical changes to help you work with this sort of data with greater security awareness.

For users that have been identified by the Rapid Response Team as potentially having Confidential Data (SSNs) on your machine, we are asking for your help in preparing for a visit from our UIS technicians (or local administrators if you have one) by downloading software that will help you find these files. Please take the following actions, in the following order:

1. Download and install 'Find_SSN' software tool to find existing SSNs on your hard drive.

2. Map a drive to the EFS network and move all the files containing confidential data to that space (if there are files containing confidential data that you no longer need, delete them).

3. Use the Eraser Tool to permanently erase each file.
