Secure Computing for Working with Confidential Data

Whether your role is faculty or staff, the type of computer you use to conduct university business is critical if you work with confidential data (i.e., Social Security numbers, donor information, patient data, credit card numbers, driver?s license numbers). The type of computer you will need to use to protect this data is a secure, encrypted computer. Users need this type of computer to protect against virtual and physical loss of information.

The secure, encrypted computer is a desktop or laptop that is equipped with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and higher, and designed to fit the University Information Security Office?s security standards (the word security requirements will link to the requirements document). This computer does not have local administrator privileges. It also includes an encrypted hard drive with the encryption feature turned on, and fingerprint biometric reader.
