UIS Tip of the Week: Setting Up Your Computer to Download Windows Updates Automatically

Microsoft regularly announces updates to its Windows operating system. Many times, these updates are meant to fix security and other vulnerabilities in Windows. It's really important that these updates are installed on your computer to protect your computer and your data.

You might say, "do I have to always go to Microsoft's Web site to see if there are new updates?" Certainly not. You can set up your computer so that you can be notified automatically when new updates are available.

  1. Click Start, and then select Control Panel.

  1. Double-click on the System icon in the Control Panel window.

  1. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System Properties window.

  1. Make sure the Automatic option is selected. If it isn't selected, click on the circle next to that option so that a dot appears.

  1. Select the frequently and the time you want Windows to check for updates.

Note: UIS recommends you set the frequency to Every day. You can set the time to whatever works best for you.

  1. Click on the Apply button and then click OK.
