UIS Tip of the Week: How to Use 'Bounce' Mail in Macintosh OS X Tiger Mail (Mac OS Feature Only)

While ridding my Inbox of extraneous e-mail that really should have been deleted months ago, I came across a message from an ex-colleague with whom communication was no longer appropriate.  How could I subtly reject his e-mail without letting him know of my surreptitious intentions?

Similarly, although not so surreptitiously, you may want to rid yourself of unwarranted e-mail, more popularly known as junk mail. One way in Mac Mail is via the Bounce feature that allows you to send an automatic return message or 'bounced' message back to the sender. The return message the sender receives claims your email address to have permanant and fatal errors.

  1. Open your Mac Mail and select the message that you would like to bounce (make sure it is highlighted).

  1. From the Message drop down menu, select the Bounce option.

  1. Click OK to confirm that you would like to bounce this message.

  1. The message is then automatically removed to your deleted messages folder or trash can. The sender in turn receives an e-mail claiming your address to have permanent errors.
