UIS Tip of the Week: Can't Eject Your Disc from Your Mac Computer? Use the Disk Utility
The other day I inserted a CD into the disc drive of my Mac computer, all set to review some important documents from my boss. So imagine my surprise when, as I waited and waited, no disc icon appeared on my desktop! What was I going to do now? How was I going to read the documents, and then remove the disc from my computer? Would the disc be stuck in the drive for all eternity?
I then discovered the Disk Utility, a handy little program built into my Mac that would enable me to free the disc, and those really important documents, from the confines of the disc drive.
- Open the Finder.
- Select Utilities from the Go menu. The Utilities folder is displayed.
- Click on Disk Utility. You'll see a preview of the Disk Utility on the far right of the Utilites window.

- Double-click on the Disk Utility icon, located in the Preview pane. The Disk Utility gathers information about your drives and then is displayed.
- Select the listing for your hard drive (in this example, "My Hard Drive"), located on the left side of the Disk Utility window.

- Click on the Eject button to eject your disc from the drive.
