UIS Tip of the Week: Checking the Amount of Free Space on Your Computer
Your department has finally started using GUShare. (What's GUShare, you may ask? Find out at http://uis.georgetown.edu/sharing/gushare/index.html.)
This is one whopping big file, and you wonder if you'll have enough room to copy it to your computer. Now you can quickly check your space usage to find out exactly how much space you're using.
Checking Free Space on a Windows Computer
- Click on Start, and then select My Computer.

- Highlight the drive (for example, your C: drive) whose space usage you want to check. On the left side of the My Computer window, under Details, you'll see the total size of the drive and the total amount of free space.

Checking Free Space on a Mac Computer
- Open the Finder.
- Highlight the HD Macintosh icon on your Desktop.

- Select Get Info from the File menu.

A popup window will appear (similar to the one shown below) showing you the total amount of space on your computer, the amount of space you're currently using, and the amount of space currently available.
