Summer Vacation?

UIS Tech Writing Team

Summer is University employees' time to relax, right? Wrong. We at UIS understand that this common misconception is just not true. In fact, for many of us, summer is our busiest time of year.

Take Tony Cipriano, the Senior Manager of Classrooms, Labs and New Technologies. Every summer, during the time of year when all of his student employees are away, Tony and the three members of his team rebuild the entire Georgetown University public lab system. As soon as the labs are finished, Tony's group deals with a rush of faculty requests for software installations in the labs. This year Tony's team has completed 21 separate projects in addition to their regular research projects on new software and technology.

Also busy is Chris Peabody, director of Network and Computing Services. He and his team have devoted their summer to expanding the wireless network campus-wide for the new school year. Another special project is a major network upgrade that includes installing new equipment in Poulton Hall. Recent construction on campus has also added to the group's workload. The Ryan Hall renovation has meant that Chris's group must move the campus's central voice and data network equipment out of the building. Chris's team is also responsible for installing the cable, voice, data, and electronics circuits and equipment in the new The St. Mary's Technology Center. On top of this, the team has maintained their usual duties of monitoring network equipment and managing bandwidth.

Will Anderson, acting manager of Support Services, reports that summer is one of his team's busiest times. Every year, UIS staffers work during NSO weekend to help new students familiarize themselves with crucial computer services. After that, for the first few weeks of the semester, the HelpDesk and Service Desk accommodate a rush of traffic as new students set up their computers network use, enable their computer accounts, and order cable and telephone service.

This is just a small fraction of the work UIS has done over the summer. Keep reading E-Notes to learn about new improvements and services.
