Welcome Back to New and Improved Tech Services

The new academic year has arrived and so have big changes in Georgetown University's technology services. Our computer network has speeded up to 1000 megabits per second, new advanced technology classrooms are opening, technical staff have been brought together in a newly refurbished building, and existing services have been made easier to use. Read this Welcome Back issue of E-Notes to learn more.

St. Mary's Technology Center Opens
Beth Ann Bergsmark
After almost one year of construction, the renovated St. Mary's Hall has opened in time for the new school year. St. Mary's now houses the School of Nursing and Health Studies and a University-wide technology center that includes a computer lab, a walk-in technology service center, computer sales and repair, training space, and a high-tech classroom. As an added benefit, St. Mary's will serve as headquarters for the University's technology support staff, increasing efficiency of service.

The Ties that Bind: Forging a Solid Chain to the Internet
Chuck Wolfe and Robert Boyajian
Georgetown's network infrastructure acts as a chain, binding together the buildings on campus and linking them to the Internet. Now, we've all been told many, many times that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. So, how should UIS make sure our chain to the Internet doesn't break? We could check each link and make sure it's strong; or we could use two chains instead of just one. UIS is following both these strategies to ensure that the University enjoys fast, stable Internet connections.

The UIS Beowulf Cluster: High Performance Computing
The Advanced Research Computing Group
Imagine you're in charge of shelving new books in a library. In this library, books aren't shelved by subject, or author, or even by title; they're shelved according to which pages have the word "got" printed on them. Each time a new book comes in, before you can tell where it belongs, you must list all the places that the word "got" appears in the text.

Demo Models in Hoya Computing
Nora Mexia
While Hoya Computing has always worked with vendors to secure educational discounts for computer systems, our new office in St. Mary's allows us to demonstrate these systems for the first time. These demo models of complete Apple and Dell computer systems (also known as bundles) have been created especially for the Georgetown University community and are available for both laptop computers and desktop computers.

Backing Up Your Data
Devlan Nocera
You work hard on your documents every day, creating, revising, and re-revising, striving for perfection. What would you do if you lost all of them?

A Georgetown Shibboleth
Michael Neuman
In the Old Testament, "shibboleth" was a password used to prevent Ephraimites from intruding into the Gileadite camp. If a soldier pronounced "shibboleth" incorrectly, the Gileadites knew he was a member of the Ephraimite army and disposed of him immediately. Today Shibboleth is an Internet2 middleware project designed to facilitate inter-institutional authentication and authorization.

Summer Vacation?
The UIS Tech Writing Team
Summer is University employees' time to relax, right? Wrong. We at UIS understand that this common misconception is just not true. In fact, for many of us, summer is our busiest time of year.
