New Images for Replacement Cycle Computers
Better Security and More Convenience

Specifications for Windows PCs on the replacement cycle have recently been updated to provide better security and new features.

Faculty and staff receiving replacement cycle PCs will now log into their network accounts through the Microsoft client for Netware.

The new configuration will also provide users with additional levels of security. Strong passwords will be required to log in to new computers, and security logging is enabled. Symantec AntiVirus 8.1 will be installed and configured to perform daily Live Updates and weekly scans. Windows Update will be configured to download and install patches automatically.

Another new feature is the "Image" folder containing complete copies of the department’s chosen office productivity suite (Microsoft Office 2003, Corel WordPerfect Office Suite Professional 10, or both). Now users can add new features to their office software without borrowing a CD from Hoya Computing. Also on the desktop will be a "Driver" folder containing software needed to run hardware components, such as the video card and the CD burner.

In addition, the following applications will be installed on all new replacement cycle computers:

  • Mozilla 1.6 e-mail client.
  • MS Outlook 2003
  • Internet Explorer Web browsing software.
  • CorporateTime calendar client.
  • Hummingbird mainframe access software.
  • SSL Secure Shell file transfer software.
  • Roxio CD burning software.
  • Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader.
  • Power DVD viewer (for computers with DVD drives).

UIS begins meeting with departments scheduled for computer replacements one to two months before new computers are delivered. At that time, technicians will help staff identify their needs for computer resources and back up their data. Completing the entire process will take approximately six weeks to two months.
