Phone Migration at GU Hospital
New Telephones and Numbers for GUH Buildings

Larry Fields

On April 10, GU Hospital (Medstar) began shifting its buildings' telecommunications services to Hospital-owned equipment. After this project is completed in summer, Hospital buildings will no longer be using Georgetown University telecommunications equipment or services.

As a result of this shift, faculty and staff working in Hospital buildings (whether employed by the Hospital or by the University) will receive a new telephone set and telephone number. Buildings that will be migrated to the Hospital's telecommunications equipment are the Main Hospital Building, Bles, Gorman, Pasquerilla Healthcare Center (PHC), and the Concentrated Care Center (CCC).

Kober-Cogan, although owned by GU Hospital (Medstar), will not be switched to Hospital telephone equipment. The Medical Center Research Buildings (Preclinical Science, Basic Science, Building D, Med-Dent, and New Research Building (NRB)) will remain on University telecommunications equipment as well. Faculty and staff working in these buildings (whether employed by the Hospital or by the University) will keep their current telephone numbers.

Plans for the Lombardi Cancer Center and 2115 Wisconsin Avenue will be announced through Georgetown University broadcast e-mail, Monday Memos, and E-Notes.

GU Hospital (Medstar) has obtained the prefix "202-444-" for the new telephone network. Most faculty and staff will keep the last four digits of their current telephone number; for others the entire number will change. Callers to the old number will hear a recorded message telling them the new number. The recorded message will be available through December 31, 2003; calls to the old number after that date will not go through.

As a result of the numbering changes, calls from the University to GU Hospital and vice-versa will require dialing 9+ all seven digits of the telephone number after the switch-over.

Georgetown will continue to list faculty and staff with Hospital telephone numbers in the University's online directory. Listings in the online directory will be updated as telephone numbers are switched over. Until the shift is completed, Monday Memos will remind faculty and staff to verify their online directory listings once they receive their new numbers. If the directory listing is not current, faculty and staff can write to phonebook@georgetown.edu to request that their listings be updated.
