IP Printing

In the past, most campus departments connected their computers to shared printers through the campus-wide Novell network. But now it is possible for UIS to offer network printing services while reducing Novell network traffic. Faculty and staff with Windows XP and Windows 2000 computers can use IP printing instead.

Computer's configured for IP printing can use their Internet connections to send data to a printer. When UIS removed the outmoded APPS1 server from the Novell network several months ago, departments that had logged into APPS1 were switched to IP printing. All departments will be switched to IP printing in the future, but why wait? You can set up IP printing yourself in just a few minutes.

To set up IP printing on a computer, you will need to know your printer's manufacturer, model name, and IP address. Printers' manufacturers and model names are usually displayed on the case. You can find the IP address by looking for a sticker on the front of your printer. If your printer does not have a sticker, contact the UIS Help Desk at (202) 687-4949 or help@georgetown.edu for the information.

Once you have this information, see the UIS Web site for instructions on setting up IP printing. Check either How to Use Windows XP: Setting Up a Network Printer or How to Use Windows 2000: Setting Up a Network Printer, depending on your operating system.
