Innovations 2004 Dahlgren Memorial Library Launches New Campaign Janette Shaffer
With its "Innovations 2004" campaign, Dahlgren Memorial Library will launch a series of new and innovative services for 2004. The January campaign kick-off featured six new technology-based services benefiting GUMC faculty, staff and students alike. Dahlgren staff began promoting these services at various locations within the Medical Center during the week of January 26.
Journal finder (TDnet)
Library patrons may now use Georgetown University's new TDnet Journal Finder to locate print and electronic journals from the collections of all of Georgetown's libraries on one comprehensive list. TDnet Journal Finder features an alphabetic list that allows users to browse all journal titles in one easy step and an advanced search feature allows them to search journal titles by subject. For easier browsing, the Journal Finder can furnish separate lists for the main campus and medical campus libraries.
Course reserves
Starting in the spring 2004 semester, Dahlgren Library is using the Blackboard online course management system to authenticate and authorize access to course reserves With instructors' permission, library staff will add reserve content to their Blackboard course sites. If a Blackboard course site does not exist for a particular class, an instructor can permit library staff to create one. Using Blackboard facilitates student access to electronic copies of documents in PDF format and information about books on reserve. This new process for course reserves allows faculty and the library to comply consistently with TEACH Act and copyright regulations.
Electronic document delivery
Dahlgren Library now has the capability to electronically deliver articles requested via its inter-library loan and document delivery services. Requestors paying for articles with budget codes or credit cards can access their documents anywhere and anytime using their personal ILLiad accounts. An added benefit is increased format flexibility, since articles are provided as PDF files and may be printed, saved, or downloaded.
Online material renewal
Dahlgren Library now allows patrons to check their library accounts, view material due dates, and renew checked out library items instantly from any Internet connection using their GOCard numbers or ID barcode numbers.
Presentation technology
The audio/visual renovation in the Research Building Auditorium was completed in the fall of 2003 to provide state-of-the-art technology for presentations. The video projector was upgraded, and a new DVD player and new VCRs were installed. The addition of a new electronic podium and touch panel gives the room more functionality by allowing the presenter full control over the equipment and lighting. This room also features an input for a press box in the back of the room for news cameras, and the capability to play background music between sessions. Using a DVD recorder, presentations can be recorded in real time directly into digital media. Contact Classroom Technology Services (CTS) for more information about this service.
Off-campus access
The Library's EZproxy service was activated in the fall of 2003, and users have been pleased with its convenience. EZproxy allows off-campus users to connect to selected library resources anytime from any Internet connection. It is an improvement over using user names and passwords to access MDConsult, Ovid, and ScienceDirect off-campus because the user must only remember one user name and password (last name and GOCard or ID card number). During 2004, more resources will be added to EZproxy to expand user's off-campus access to the library's materials.
More information
More information and a user feedback form are available at the campaign Web page. The "Innovations 2004" campaign will continue throughout the year, introducing exciting new services such as the addition of over 600 electronic journal titles, Ovid and PubMed Link-Out enhancements and inter-database linking.
