GUMC Network Receives Transplant page 1, page 2
How can I take advantage of the higher network speeds? The network ports are set to AUTO, allowing connected computers to automatically reach the highest capable speed. Servers attached to the network are hard-coded by NTM with their speed/duplex settings.
Were ports turned off during the upgrade? All ports that were connected to the old network were re-connected to an active port on the new network. Inactive ports were temporarily turned off so that NTM could make sure they were properly assigned before they were activated.
I have jacks in my office that are not working. Why? When the jacks for the GUMC network were first installed, some of the jacks were intended for future growth and were not activated. NTM and Technology Service Support (TSS) are currently soliciting user requirements from GUMC. After this review is complete, any additional jacks needed at GUMC will be activated and connected to the network.
To request that additional jacks be activated in your office, download a Data Service Order form from http://www.georgetown.edu/uis/onlinehelp/links_hardware.htm. If you have any questions completing the form contact customer service at (202)687-4800.
For additional jacks in classroom, labs, meeting rooms, or other shared space please contact Jacalyn Banks at (202) 687-8812 or jlb48@georgetown.edu.
How fast is the current Internet connection? The current speed of the Internet connection shared by GU, GUMC, and MedStar is 45 MBps.
Are there plans to upgrade it? GU has signed a contract with Cogent, a high speed Gigabit Internet Service Provider, to install a faster Internet connection later this year.
Is the network secure? There currently is a firewall (a system to prevent unauthorized network access) between the GU and MedStar network. A joint firewall committee comprising members from GU, GUMC, and MedStar is working to confirm that GU, GUMC, and MedStar networks are excluding inappropriate and unauthorized network access, in compliance with federal HIPAA privacy regulations.
Are there plans for wireless network access? This past November, NTM completed a test program comparing the leading wireless vendors and selected Cisco as the University's preferred vendor. UIS is working on a deployment project plan that will include user support and security issues.
Chuck Wolfe is senior network engineer for UIS.
