GUMC Network Receives Transplant
Chuck Wolfe
Over three weeks this past summer, the University Information Systems Network Technology Management (UIS/NTM) team upgraded the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) network. This faster, more robust network provides the higher bandwidth and faster application access speeds that GUMC needs now and will need in the future.
- Over 2,200 ports were upgraded to the new network.
- Cisco's latest Catalyst 3500 and 4000 series switches were installed, providing speeds of up to 100 megabytes per second (MBps).
- To prevent bottlenecks when a large number of users are on the network, the central cable connecting all network computers was upgraded for speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second.
- To provide disaster recovery should the primary GUMC core connection fail, a backup connection was installed in the New Research Building, Building D, the Med/Dent building, the Basic Science building, the Preclinical Sciences Building, Kober-Cogan and Dahlgren Memorial Library.
- UIS also upgraded Georgetown University and GUMC's Domain Name Service, a system that helps control Internet and e-mail traffic.
This successful network upgrade has enabled NTM to plan the separation of GUMC and MedStar's shared network in the Lombardi Cancer Center. Once the separation is complete, GUMC employees working in Lombardi and Kober-Cogan will have exclusive use of a new network.
