GroupWise and GUSUN Forwarding Turned Off
On June 30, 2003, e-mail routing from @gusun.georgetown.edu and @gunet.georgetown.edu addresses was disabled for individuals who migrated from GroupWise and GUSUN e-mail to GUMail in 2001. Faculty, students, and staff affiliated with the McDonough School of Business and Medstar/GU Hospital who currently use GroupWise will not be affected.
All messages sent to GroupWise and GUSUN addresses will now be returned to the sender, so remember to remove them from your e-mail forwarding. Go to http://netid.georgetown.edu and click
Review or Change Your E-mail Routing.
If you are subscribed to a Listproc list with your @gunet or @gusun address, please follow the instructions located at http://uis.georgetown.edu/email/listproc to update your subscription address.

New Virus Warning
The latest e-mail virus to circulate at Georgetown University is W32.Sobig.E. As with other viruses that recently hit Georgetown, W32.Sobig.E is transmitted through an infected e-mail attachment. When the attachment is opened, W32.Sobig.E infects the computer and sends a copy of itself to every e-mail address saved in the computer's address book.
To avoid this and other e-mail viruses, don't open any suspicious attachments and install Symantec Norton AntiVirus. If you receive an infected message, please forward the message, with full headers, to abuse@georgetown.edu.
Register to Borrow Software from Hoya Computing
E-Notes reported last month that Hoya Computing's Software Lending Library is now searchable online through the Course Reserves module in the University Library's online catalog, GEORGE. Borrowers must now be registered with the Georgetown University Library to borrow software from Hoya Computing. Library registration is automatic for students. Faculty and staff can register by bringing their GOCards to any University library (Lauinger, Blommer, or Dahlgren). Find the full article "GEORGE Comes to Hoya Computing: Check Software Availability Online" at http://uis.georgetown.edu/publications/enotes/mayjun03.
Ordering Computer Lab Software
With a new semester comes new syllabi, and new syllabi are sometimes accompanied by new software. If you need specialized academic software installed in a computer lab, review the article "Ordering Computer Lab Software" at http://uis.georgetown.edu/publications/enotes/mayjun02 There you will find a step-by-step guide for ordering software and getting it tested and installed in the computer labs.
Computer-based Training News
Computer-based Training tutorials help you expand your technology skills in your own time, at your own pace, and at your own computer. UIS Training will revamp this free service in August by offering new CBT titles. Students, faculty, and staff may borrow the tutorials on CDs from Hoya Computing or access them through a new, easier-to-use Web interface. New CBT topics include "Introduction to UNIX", "Advanced Elements of Dreamweaver", and "Collaborative Features in Word 2002".
Adobe License Updates
If you bought a license for Adobe Acrobat 5.0 after March 15, 2003, you have the option of upgrading your license to version 6.0 for free. If you bought the license before March 15, you have the option of upgrading to version 6.0 by purchasing a new license.
Starting June 6, 2003, all Adobe products under our license agreement (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Pagemaker, etc) will include maintenance. This will affect the prices for all products offered under our agreement. Maintenance includes two-years upgrade insurance—a feature that enables you to get new versions for free any time within the two-year period. After the two-year period, you will have the option to continue buying the maintenance program instead of purchasing an upgrade. This option is a great cost-saver in the long run. Call Hoya Computing at (202) 687-0640 for details.
Successful Telephone Upgrade
An upgrade to the equipment that controls the university's telephone system was successfully completed on June 13. Currently, the entire university telephone system relies on equipment housed in the Ryan Administration building. Not only is major construction expected in the Ryan Administration building soon, any problems happening in the building could cause the entire university phone system to go down. During the upgrade, network technicians divided the essential equipment into two separate areas of campus, sufficiently distant from each other that if there were a problem in one area, the other area would still be able to provide phone service to the campus. Besides creating additional security for our phone system, the equipment upgrade will form the foundation for new phone features that we can implement in the future.
