News Briefs and New Resources

Successful GUMail Upgrade

The system-wide upgrade of the GUMail system that took place on Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20 was successful. During the upgrade, the hardware and software that powered the GUMail system since its launch in 1999 was replaced by new equipment. Upgrading has improved GUMail's performance and reliability and enhanced the GUWebMail service with the addition of personal address books.

Recordings for Hospital Numbers Deactivated

As reported in the May 2003 E-Notes article Phone Migration at GU Hospital: New Telephones and Numbers for GUH Buildings, Georgetown University Hospital has moved its faculty and staff from telephone numbers on the Georgetown University telephone system to new numbers on its own telephone system. To help ease the transition, recordings were placed on each superseded University telephone number to inform callers of the new Hospital number taking its place. On December 31, 2003, those recordings were deactivated.

GU Hospital telephone numbers are now composed of the prefix "202-444-" followed by a four-digit extension. Most Hospital-employed faculty and staff kept the last four digits of their previous University-issued telephone numbers, though some were not able to do so. Consult your Georgetown University 2003-2004 Telephone Directory for current Hospital telephone numbers. You will be required to dial "9" before calling a Hospital telephone number from campus.

Training Updates

The Spring 2004 technology training schedule has been posted to http://uis.georgetown.edu/training. Classes include Mozilla Mail and New Employee Computer Orientation. UIS also provides specialized training upon request, such as training for Windows XP for departments receiving replacement cycle computers. Write to train@georgetown.edu to request specialized training.

New Broadcast Communications Web Site

So the campus community is not inundated with messages of questionable value, broadcast e-mail and voice mail must meet set of criteria and undergo an approval process if they are to be distributed.

A new source for information about broadcast communications can be found online at http://broadcast.georgetown.edu. This information is restricted to members of the Georgetown University community; you will be prompted to enter your NetID and NetID password to view the page.
