Faculty Achievement Celebrated on Innovations Day Mindy McWilliams
On Thursday, November 20, CNDLS and the Georgetown teaching and learning community held the second annual "Innovations Day: A Celebration in Teaching and Learning at Georgetown". A central feature of the day was the plenary lunch with guest speaker George Walker, Ph.D., senior scholar and director of the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Dr. Walker spoke to an audience of over a hundred faculty, graduate students and staff about the importance of re-thinking graduate education, especially in regard to teaching preparation. To this end, Georgetown's Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience is one of nine neuroscience departments across the country participating as partners in the Carnegie Foundation's Initiative on the Doctorate.
After George Walker's talk, Randy Bass, Executive Director of CNDLS and Jim O'Donnell, Georgetown Provost, announced the winners of the 2004-05 Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TLT) Fellowships and honored the 2003-04 Fellows who have completed the first of their two years in the fellowship. The new round of fellows includes faculty from all three of Georgetown's campuses. Diana Donahoe (GU Law Center), Wolfgang Rennert (Pediatrics), Mark Rom (Georgetown Public Policy Institute and Government) and Ed Van Keuren (Physics) will begin their fellowships in January 2004.
In addition to the plenary lunch, Georgetown faculty presented their work with new technologies in two sessions, while CNDLS facilitated discussions on Rethinking Graduate Education and on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Presenting at the technology sessions were Nacha Klopf (Nursing), Wen-hui Li (East Asian Languages), Ed Van Keuren (Physics), Mary Furlong (Pathology), Cristina Sanz (Spanish and Portuguese), Pierre Taminiaux (French), and Wolfgang Rennert (Pediatrics). Their projects ranged from creating online textbooks and resources for their students to collecting real-time data on language learning.
Several faculty created posters about their innovative work with new pedagogies and technologies, which were unveiled at a multimedia poster reception in the ICC Galleria on Monday evening, November 17. The posters remained in the ICC Galleria the rest of the week and were also displayed electronically in the foyer of Lauinger Library. These posters will soon be available on the CNDLS and Georgetown University Web sites.
