New System for Hoya Computing
Database Provides Faster Searches, Easier Borrowing

Nora Mexia Mead

The Hoya Computing Software Lending Library has recently stopped tracking circulation through Lauinger Library's online catalog, GEORGE. Circulation is now tracked by an in-house database covering the Software Lending Library's full range of Windows and Mac software. Because the database is controlled by Hoya Computing, staff can check software availability more quickly and update data more frequently.

Borrowing software will be simplified in several ways.

  • Hoya Computing staff can search for available CDs faster than they could with GEORGE.
  • Hoya Computing patrons will no longer need to be registered University Library patrons to borrow software.
  • To borrow the software, a patron will simply need to present his or her GOCard to any Hoya Computing staff member.
  • To return the CD, it is enough to leave them in Hoya Computing. They will be taken back from the system using their bar code.
  • Software CDs will be bar coded to better track their whereabouts.

To borrow software from Hoya Computing, take the following steps:

  1. Browse the Hoya Computing software distribution database. (You will be prompted to log in with your NetID and NetID password.) The software distribution database will tell you what software is available to borrow, and what, if anything, installing the software costs.
  2. Before you visit Hoya Computing, call (202) 687-0640 or write to hoyacomputing@georgetown.edu to ask if any copies of the software are available to borrow. If none are available, a Hoya Computing staff member will inform you when copies are due to be returned by other patrons.
  3. Visit Hoya Computing in G36 St. Mary's Hall between the hours of 10:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. You will be asked to present your GOCard when borrowing software.

Hoya Computing lends software installation CDs for three days. In the event that a patron does not return software on time, Hoya Computing will send weekly reminder e-mails until the software is returned. Patrons will not be permitted to borrow again until the software is returned.

If you would rather purchase than borrow software, even if the software you need is not included in the Software Lending Library, Hoya Computing will help your order it at an academic discount.

Nora Mexia Mead is Distribution Services Coordinator for Hoya Computing.
