University NetID Services: @georgetown.edu Mail Routing

The @georgetown.edu e-mail routing service is available to all faculty, staff, and students at Georgetown, including Georgetown University Hospital faculty and staff, allowing you to keep one e-mail address for your entire tenure at Georgetown. Degree-seeking students maintain this same routing address after graduation.

How it works
Your @georgetown.edu e-mail address is different from any other address you have had at Georgetown. It is not tied to a single account or system as Groupwise os GUMail address is. Instead, it is a pointer that redirects messages to another mail account that you specify--GUMail, Groupwise, or any other account in the world. No matter how many times you may change the actual account where you choose to read your mail, your @georgetown.edu e-mail address always remains the same.

You control exactly where you read your mail by telling your @georgetown.edu address where to point. When a message is sent to your @georgetown.edu address, it is automatically redirected to whatever address you have specified.

Setting the pointer
In order for your @georgetown.edu address to work, you must first specify where you actually want your e-mail to go. To do this, use the your NetID and password to log into the e-mail routing tool. This tool shows where your mail is currently being directed and allows you to set or change the delivery location.

Employee and credit students will have a primary mail delivery location by default.  If you wish, you can have mail forwarded to multiple addresses. Whenever a message is sent to your @georgetown.edu address, a separate, independent copy will be forwarded to each address you specify. You can change your routing settings as often as necessary.

Once students graduate and become alumni, they are able to keep their @georgetown.edu address. After you graduate and before your Georgetown-hosted email account is closed, you should update your e-mail routing settings using the tool above. For more information, you can refer to the e-mail routing section of the Alumni Association's web site, Georgetown Alumni Online.
